While studying at the Vilnius Academy of Arts, Donatas Pirštelis became interested in film and began experimenting with a camera rented for students (at the time, there were only a few film cameras in post-Soviet Lithuania).
Not long after, he received a state grant from the Ministry of Culture for his creative work and made his debut as a director-cinematographer, presenting two short films: Operation (1997) and To Be So (2001).
These films gained international attention at avant-garde festivals in Germany, such as those in Oberhausen, Leipzig, and Kassel cities, as well as at Lithuania's "Kino Pavasaris."

Despite his successful start in directing, Donatas transitioned to a career as a film production designer, holding various positions in this field, and worked with renowned Lithuanian directors such as Algimantas Puipa, Audrius Juzėnas, Donatas Ulvydas, Šarūnas Bartas, and others.
Since 2011, he has served as the director of UAB "Cineeffects Studio," a company specializing in film and advertising set design and effects, becoming more actively involved in international film projects.
He works not only with the company but also as a freelance art director and film production designer, construction manager. Some of the notable projects he has contributed to include HBO's Chernobyl, Netflix's Stranger Things, Jean-François Delassus' The Fall of the Wall, and History documentaries Barbarians and Medieval Spain.
For his construction design of the sets in HBO's miniseries Chernobyl (2018-2019), he received a commendation from the Television Academy's "Primetime Emmy Awards."
